REflection as a Practice
The other key component of REframe is a reflective practice to establish a process of REthinking. This ongoing process of Reflection allows teams to assess progress toward their References, adjust strategies, and refine actions as conditions evolve. Recognising that impacts, especially in urban development, are often non-linear and may only become apparent in hindsight, REframe integrates reflection into the project process, enabling teams to critically rethink their actions.
To initiate and support a practice of reflection, the Toolbox for Reflection offers a curated set of tools for reflection for the context of transformative urban research, designed to stimulate collaborative reflec- tion. These tools have been developed based on both theoretical insights and practical experiences from SURE projects, and have been shaped by feedback from workshops, peer discussions, and collaborative sessions.
The Toolbox is designed to be flexible and adaptable, enabling teams to select the tools that best fit their specific needs and the different phases of their project. To provide an initial orientation, the Toolbox is organised according to key stages of a project:
- Planning the future: Tools for envisioning and strategising project goals
- Tracking progress: Tools for monitoring and assessing development throughout the project
- Learning from each other: Tools for fos- tering knowledge sharing and collaboration
- Collecting data: Tools for gathering insights and harvesting outcomes,
especially towards the end of the project
Whether teams are just starting, tracking progress, or wrapping up, the Pathways guide them to the right tool. A guide of how to play with it and examples of how to play with the use the tools, along with details on their application, can be found in Part 3 of “Navigating Urban Development: Learnings from East and Southeast Asia”.
